how can i get over the fear of catching a fast softball?
i went to my 2nd softball practice today, it’s to learn how to fast pitch. when we were warming up, just playing catch, i missed catching the ball almost every single time!! im new at softball. i tried out for slow pitch softball last year and didnt make it because ive never played before.
at the 1st practice i catched almost every ball but today i couldnt catch any and i think its because it was thrown a little harder. the 1st practice i was warming up with one of the girls but shes not that good so she didnt throw hard but today i was warming up with the coach because there was an uneven number of girls and i didnt have a partner.
i think i couldnt catch because im scared of getting hit by the ball. mostly in the face, but the ball is never thrown at my face. so it has to be the way im catching it.
my friends were saying its because my glove is facing downward when i catch so the ball falls out or sometimes i close the glove before the ball gets to the inside
what should i do?
let it hit me? today it hit me in the shin and there was a big bump there for a while but when i got hit, it didnt affect me at all. another hit my wrist, last week the girl threw it and it hit me in the foot, last year i was playing by myself i threw it up in the air i looked down because i thought i was going to rip over a soccer ball, i looked back up and it hit me in the eye (that one killed!) but when it hits me i dont really care but when the ball is coming i get scared, its weird, so it has to be the way im catching it…

Yes, you are afraid of the ball, but you shouldnt be. Everytime you are going to catch the ball you should concentrate and follow the ball with your eyes until it hits your glove. Your glove should also be facing upwards because you will get hit if its facing downwards. Also, the best way to make sure you are going to catch the ball is to put your whole body in front of it. Wherever the ball moves you should move and make sure that the ball is always in front of you. By doing this if you miss the catch it will hit your body. Yes it does hurt to get hit by a ball, but this is the only way youre going to catch fast balls and soon enough youll be a good softball player.
ok so you didnt like my answer, but I dont know what to say. I understand that you are just starting off and you are new to the game. I guess at this point you are only playing catch, but if you do take my tips from now youll develop into a better player. It doesnt have to hit you, Im just telling you to position yourself to make the catch. If you dont want to use your body though, just concentrate, watch the ball, and believe in yourself.
just let it hit you then you’ll feel the pain and your body will naturally not let it hit you
1. Listen to your friends, and let them help you.
2. Practice extra (daily!) with someone who can throw it fast.
Improving your technique is good, but putting yourself in that situation a whole bunch of times is what will really make you comfortable.
you just have to keep trying at it.and eventually you will start catching it and not be afraid of the ball.
Try soccer, that’s what most people play when they can’t hack real sports.
That is a very tough fear to overcome, but the bottom line is this: How bad do you want it? It’s the desire to compete that will overcome that fear. It might hurt for a few minutes, but it also will help you to learn how to use your glove to defend yourself plus be an ouststanding fielder. Just do your best and don’t worry.
well.. if you think that it is the fear.
you really just have to try to overcome it..
i mean. there isn’t really much else you can do.
i have been playing softball sinces i was 5, competitive travel softball for 5 years, and competitive travel ASA softball for 3 years, so i guess you could say that i am kind of expierenced with these things.
but if you really think that it is the way that you are catching it.
here are some tips.
make sure that the fingers of your glove are pointing upward toward the sky. it is a lot easier to catch the ball that way. plus, if you catch the ball with your fingers facing downward, you have less of a chance of catching it and you have a greater chance of getting hurt.
try to always catch the ball with two hands. have your free hand covering the outsideof your glove. that way you can use it to help shut your glove. and it will also be a quicker transition from catching the ball to throwing it because your hand is already there to get you a head start.
GOOD LUCK!
my best advice is to maybe play catch at home with a racket ball or tenis ball and just throw it off a wall then get your whole body in front of it, use both hands to catch it, then just aply this to when you are practicing the real thing.
i have been playing since i was 6 years old and i am still a little scared when the ball is coming at my feet, but if i let the ball hit me and still make a play i feel a hole lot better than if i miss it, i thnk that if you have that mentalitly you will be fine.
