So Why Is It So Challenging To Build A Fuel-Efficient Vehicle?
Energy economy was regarded as a significant factor in their choice of a new car by a minimum of 1/3 of buyers in America. With so many people now very concerned with global warming, pollution and dependence on foreign oil, you might be surprised to know that in 1992 General Motors built a car that actually got 100 miles per gallon. Another vehicle, the GM TPC, which looked a lot like the Geo Metro, weighed only 1000 pounds and would get 75 miles per gallon. Unfortunately, in order to meet American safety regulations, the 3-cylinder vehicle required reinforcement weighing 200 pounds, which resulted in further development being discarded.
It might be stunning that GM had this car built and abandoned, but they had other prototypes that ended the same way. The GM Lean Machine of 1982, which could achieve 80 mpg, along with the GM Ultralite which achieved a fabulous 100 mpg, were two of these vehicles. When Honda in 1992 achieved 50 mpg with the Civic VX, GM was selling cars that got 20 mpg, while in the background they had vehicles capable of 100 mpg. Because cars have already been developed that get 100 miles per gallon, then why are they not being marketed to the general public?
How come conventional vehicles sold in the US, while at the same time, the same vendors are selling different vehicles far away in other countries? Vehicles that achieve more than 70 mpg have been sold in Europe and Japan for a number of years. The Lupo, a Volkswagen, is an ideal instance of a car that gets 78 MPG, but hasn’t been sold in the US. In 2007, Honda in the united states introduced the FIT, in other regions known as the Jazz. The Jazz in Japan has methods to enhance fuel economy and a smaller engine, but for the US, the Fit doesn’t even contain a smaller engine as an option.
Auto manufacturers in the united states express to their public that they manufacture big autos because they, the public, love big autos. Building a small commuter type vehicle doesn’t make the manfacturer big money, unlike with a large SUV. A Tank on Wheels may be the thing to get – that’s the concept that the commercials beguile the American public with. Because options have never been offered demonstrates where the big companies have their interests. The top in fuel economy might have been General Motors, but they choose to often be the leader in SUVs instead. Several other manufacturers in addition have developed fuel-efficient cars, but they’ve all practiced the same as GM by not offering them to Americans.
Even with global warming and the incredible pollution of the world environment, US car makers have yet to react positively and at least give Americans the option of a fuel-efficient car. How many people would have loved having a car that got good gas mileage, and were never presented with the option? Perhaps it is the perfect time to get those outdated plans back out and build a vehicle that has already been built before.
