I coach both summer ball at a high level and small college. When I am evaluating players for the first time, especially younger players, the first thing I look for is how well they throw the ball. the reason for this is that if they throw very well it means they are out there practicing or they have aparent or friend that works with them. the other sgesstions are also good but being a situational hitter is an advanced skill and if you are just beginning and in a league of equal neither you nor the others will have it. Show the coach you know how to bunt and and are willing to do what it takes to win and you will make any team. I can teach you how to bat, how to run the bases, how to play team defense, and generally how to play the game, what I can’t teach you is how to practice on your own, and that is what I look for, a player that loves the game enough to put in extra work when it is not required by the coach. We won the 12U national championship as well as always finishing in the top five of other nationals and I can tell you if you do the above you would make my team.
Have you played before?
If you haven’t then ask some friends who have.
If you already have some experience play catch as much as you can to get you comfortable.
Go to the batting cages.
Also get your dad or a friend to hit you grounders and pop ups.
yeah if you have played before start jogging and doing a little bit of weightlifting. just enough jogging like maybe a mile to a mile and a half. Go to the batting cages and do some soft toss. play catch and just strech your arms alot. If you haven’t played get some friends who do and have them give you the D.L.
Hand and eye coordination is a key. You must develop this and the rest of the game is simple. If you have played before and have developed the basic skill sets, what will get you on any team is situational hitting. That is hitting with runners in scoring position and the abilityy to hit to theoppositee field. An average fielder can always make a team if they can hit the ball when it is needed and where it will drive in or move the runner.
if you have never played softball before
i would go to the hitting cages and start of with the slower stuff then gradually go to the faster then go back to slow so your able to hit every kind of speeds.
practice your throwing. make sure you get a good grip on the ball have the ball like a C and on the top of it have ur pointer middle ring finger on it then have ur pinky just there. your thumb should just be in place. *for a righty that was* and for a lefty the same thing just a backwords C
i would also practice a bunch of ground balls that is very important thing. start off with the slow ground balls and then gradually have them hit harder. dont forget to charge the ball when it comes at you and yo also stay low when you field it and to watch the ball.
you will do amazing dont worry.
